Warm weather is finally here! You can put away the heavy coats, open the windows, and stop using the furnace to stay warm. But, that doesn’t mean your furnace should be forgotten about until next fall.

Early spring is the ideal time to get some essential maintenance done on your heater before shutting it down for the summer. At Varsity Home Service, our team can help with checking the furnace for minor damage and completing furnace repairs. With regular maintenance you can extend the longevity of your heater and avoid having to install a replacement furnace in the future.

HVAC Maintenance Tips for Spring

A quick maintenance inspection by a trained technician is a great way to keep your heater running smoothly. However, there are also some things you can do to keep the HVAC system in good condition too.

Clean Up Around the HVAC System

Grab a dust rag to clean up all the dust that has built up in your utility room. Wipe down the outside of the furnace. Sweep the floor too. You’ll also want to remove any debris and items that may be blocking access to the furnace. Check out the AC unit outside while you are at it to remove plants or miscellaneous items that may be blocking the intake vents.

Replace the Filter

The furnace and the air conditioner usually use the same filter to clean the air before it is sent through your home’s vents. After the HVAC system has been on all winter, the filter is probably full of dust. Replacing it will ensure your air is cleaner and helps the HVAC system operate better.

Test Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors

This is also a good time to test the carbon monoxide detectors in your home to make sure they are working. Carbon monoxide is produced in the furnace as a product of the gas combustion process. Normally, it is vented outside through your heater’s flue. If the flue is damaged or the heat exchanger leaking, this deadly gas can enter the home. Test your CO2 detectors and replace the batteries annually to be safe.

Get Furnace Repairs Completed

If you have noticed some problems with the furnace’s operation during winter, consider getting it repaired now. You won’t be needing the furnace, so the technician can take as much time as they need to fix it. Plus, you’ll have a fixed, more efficient furnace ready to go in fall.
